Know before you buy it

Lately CBD is a hot product in the market. It is sold everywhere from stationary stores to pharmacy, gas stations to book stores -everywhere. It has been marketed as a cure for everything. Is it really? Lets find out more about it.

What is CBD?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol which is a derivative of marijuana in other words cannabis. Before we go further, lets know some basics.

What is Cannabis?

Cannabis sativa is a plant which can be grown anywhere. The dried leaves and flowers are used as marijuana which makes you “high”. The active chemical that causes this high is called THC or tetrahydro cannabinol. Now, this cannabis also has hundred of other chemicals called cannabinoids. One of them is cannabidiol or CBD which is marketted as CBD Oil. Although THC gives you high, CBD does not have that property. THC can intoxicate you but CBD cannot. CBD does not have addiction potential.

So what is CBD again?

CBD or cannabidiol is one of the chemicals that is derived from Marijuana plant called Cannabis sativa. CBD does not have the property to make you high or intoxicate you. It is not habit forming. People use it for a variety of purposes, commonly to treat for anxiety, insomnia and pain.

Does CBD really work?

Unfortunately we do not have any data from research trials to say yes or no. The benefit has been most extensively studied in pediatric epilepsy. Only one drug that is aproved by FDA is called Epidiolex which is used for rare form of childhood epilepsy. There has been some evidence that CBD may work for chronic pain although most find it not beneficial. Some people apparently found it beneficial for sleep and also for their anxiety. Some thought that the benefit that they got was just a placebo effect.

Some points to remember:

Over the counter CBD oil is a non regulated product. The real CBD product that is marketed has a very small concentration of cannabidiol at a very high cost. Over and above some may contain THC which is worrysome. Some products may not have CBD in it at all. How do you know if someone did not sell you a bottle of water in the name of CBD oil. The other thing is CBD is not completely benign. It can have interactions with medications that you take especially blood thinners. If you have liver disease, you need to be extra cautious taking this product since CBD can cause liver enzymes to go high.

In conclusion, CBD oil may have some beneficial effects which are not well studied by research except for childhood epilepsy. CBD has effect on liver enzymes and because of that it can affect the action of other medications you take especially blood thinners.
